Entertaiment is a thing that holds our attention and interest, or gives pleasure and delight. It can be an idea or a task, but it’s more likely to be one of the activities or events that have developed over thousands of years specifically for the purpose of keeping our attention.
The word entertain comes from the Medieval Latin intertenere, which combines the prefix in with the suffix ten. The root of ten is the Indo-European ten, meaning to stretch or expand, so it’s fitting that the word entertainment should be associated with stretching or expanding the mind. Entertaining also stimulates the brain to release seratonin and dopamine, so it can be good for you. The problem is, most entertainment is focused on backstabbing and murder, so it’s not always healthy for the mind.
